An important account of Russia in the early eighteenth century, written by a Swedish officer who had been captured by the Russians at the battle of Poltava in 1709 and spent some time as a prisoner-of-war in Siberia. The author's name as a commoner was Philipp Johann Tabbert; he adopted the name von Strahlenberg in 1707 when he was ennobled for military merits. Together with the Prussian naturalist Messerschmidt, Strahlenberg explored the lower basins of the Obi and Yenesei river systems. His map of northern Asia, which was separately issued from the present work, "is the second most important source of historical-geographical information about Siberia [after Remezov]" (Bagrow). The account contains details respecting Russian history, geography, genealogy, archaeology, philology, military history, ethnology, &c., and a description of Atlasov's travel to the Anadyr. This is the first part of the second volume, devoted to Asia, and contains the complete series of maps on eastern Russia and Siberia, including separate maps of Kamtschatka, the Aleutian and Kurile Islands. There are also maps of China, Tartary, Turkey, Persia, Turkestan, and Korea. First Edition. The author distinguished himself during the Peninsular Wars, acted as the Duke of Wellington's Adjutant-General in 1809-12, and served as ambassador to Vienna, 1814-23. "The marquis hoped to be appointed as ambassador to Russia but was disappointed in his ambition. In 1836-37 he traveled to St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Odessa as a guest of his friends among the nobility. His account describes the social life of his hosts, their games, summer sports, entertainment and other activities." (Nerhood). He also comments on architecture, government, the Imperial Academy, the military, trade and commerce, mining, and the Russian North American colonies.
