The author and a friend joined the Ceylon in Egypt but left the ship at Bombay to proceed by land, visiting Jeypore, Delhi, Agra, Lucknow, and Benares, before rejoining the ship at Calcutta. After a short stay in Penang, Singapore, and Johore, they sailed to Manila and thence to Hong Kong, Canton, Nagasaki, Kobe, Kyoto, Osaka, and Yokohama. After spending nine days in the Sandwich Islands, they called at San Francisco and visited the Yosemite Valley. Included are remarks on Indian temples and mosques, botanical gardens, the caste system, and laws relating to women, Chinese and Japanese manners and customs, scenery, hara kiri, missionary laws and amusements in the Sandwich Islands, the Leper Settlement there, gold mining in California, &c.
