First Edition. Townsend's cruise lasted from August, 1869 to December, 1870. His account includes discussion of the changes which had taken place since his last visit to the Eastern Mediterranean ten years previously. With chapters on Gibraltar, Malaga and Granada, Algiers, Tunis, Carthage, Alia, Pantellaria and Malta, Athens, Eleusis, Corinth, Argos and Nauplia, Grecian Islands, Constantinople, Dardanelles, Troy, Chios, Alexandria, and Cairo. Appearing here for the first time are a folding double-hemisphere world map showing the the tracks of James Cook's three voyages, a plate of a new and curious clock, and a plate of a geographical clock with volvelle showing the hour of the day in any part of the world, as well as two letters giving an account of the solar system, and a description of the geographical clock (see Advert on A4v). The maps and plates were drawn by the author and engraved by Terry.

Although the title-page mentions 108 maps, this would appear to be complete with 107.

First Edition. Dr. Walker accompanied Dr. Marshall to Naples to introduce vaccination, and later joined the Egyptian expedition of Sir Ralph Abercromby. His narrative includes descriptions of Naples, Malta, Minorca, Gibraltar, Tangiers, and Egypt, and pp. 435-40 contain Edward Jenner's Origin of the Vaccine Inoculation, which had been originally published in 1801. This printing is not noted by LeFanu in his Bio-Bibliography of Edward Jenner, 1749-1823.
