This work outlining a natural code of moral conduct independent of religion was originally attributed to Diderot. It was condemned as blasphemous and immoral by the Paris parlement and ordered to be burned on May 6, 1748. Diderot's first original work, the Pensées Philosophiques consists of short reflections on christianity, deism, scepticism, and atheism, and is primarily concerned with sceptically questioning the argument from design in nature, a fundamental premise of deism. At first a deist, Diderot later became an experimental materialist in philosophy and an atheist in religion.
