First Edition. A portrait of the great French general Claude Louis Hector, Duc de Villars [1653-1714] as revealed by his correspondence with the Elector of Bavaria, Mme de Maintenon, and Prince Eugène. Villars became intimately acquainted with the Elector while on an unofficial mission to the Court of Bavaria, 1686-88. Upon his return to France, he obtained the favour of Mme de Maintenon, who appointed him commissary-general of cavalry in 1689. He returned to Vienna as ambassador in 1698, displaying great skill in counteracting the intrigues of the Austrian court in relation to the Spanish succession, and there was acquainted with Prince Eugène. In 1702 he was appointed commander of an army sent to aid the Elector of Bavaria. Later, in 1709, he took command of the main army opposing the Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugène on the northern frontier. Villars' victory over Eugène at Denain in 1712 saved France from the invading forces. Villars went on to take Douai and Bouchain, and compelled the enemy to retreat to Brussels. In 1713 he negotiated the Treaty of Rastatt with Prince Eugène. Villars enjoyed great favour at the French court following the peace of Utrecht. Cioranescu 66570.
