A close personal friend of Emily Carr. A supporter of her work on the board of the Vancouver Art Gallery. An exhibiting artist, a painter of portraits and landscapes. Cheney was also a significant Medical artist in her own right and was (the first artist) attached to the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine, a post she retained until her retirement in 1962. The figure in the portrait was a nephew of the artist’s husband Dr. Hill Cheney.
