This fine watercolour shows the Montreal Mountain in the foreground with the St. Lawrence River and Nuns Island in the distance. Coulson was most likely a British officer posted to Canada in the early 1840's. Sotheby's (London) May 27, 1988 auction catalogue included two watercolours of Quebec by the same artist entitled Quebec From The Fall Of Montmorenci and Scene On The River Jacques Cartier Above Dayries Bridge, Canada 1841. He was listed as Captain R.H. Coulson.
Provenance: Collection, Right Honourable The Lord Thomson of Fleet, Toronto, bearing typed label stating the painting was drawn for Miss Byron, February 1841, & presented to Lord Thomson of Fleet on June 5th, 1974 by the Newspaper Publishers Association; Hazlitt, Gooden & Fox, London, label on verso.
